Wisconsin Soccer Coaches AssociationFor the second straight year, there's a consensus on the state's top prep girls soccer player.

Verona senior midfielder Alex Melin claimed the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year award on Wednesday, adding it to the Gatorade State Player of the Year honor she earned in May.

It capped an incredible comeback season for the Iowa recruit, who missed the 2009 season because of a torn ACL in her knee.

Melin, a second-team all-state selection as a sophomore, had 37 goals and 29 assists this spring as the Wildcats (23-3) won their first WIAA Division 1 state championship.

Verona coach Matt Heilman also was lauded by the WSCA, as he was voted the Large Schools Coach of the Year. The Wildcats' three losses all came by one goal, and the team wasn't shut out in any match.

Melin, who finished with 66 goals and 40 assists in her three-year varsity career, heads up the 11-player first team of the WSCA All-State team, which also includes Waunakee senior midfielder Taylor Madigan – last season's state player of the year.

Madigan, a Marquette recruit, and Waukesha Catholic Memorial junior Val Gonyo each were named to the top squad for the third consecutive year. Gonyo was honored as a defender this year after being a standout forward her first two prep seasons.

Six of the first-team selections also made the team in 2009: Madison Memorial senior defender Abby Beinlich, Catholic Memorial junior forward Nikki Condit and Milwaukee DSHA seniors Rachael Koontz and Kylie Nordness were repeat selections along with Madigan and Gonyo.

DSHA had three players on the top team, with senior defender Katie Klinger joining Koontz, a University of Wisconsin recruit, and DePaul recruit Nordness.

Madison Memorial junior Katy Pilarzyk, who has verbally committed to UW-Green Bay for 2011, was the first-team goalkeeper – Kenosha Bradford senior Kalli Schulz, a Navy recruit and last year's choice at the position, was one of four keepers named "Best of the Rest."

Neenah junior midfielder Vienna Behnke and Brookfield East senior midfielder Kate Reigle, a Marquette recruit, rounded out the top squad.

Nathan Laabs, who led New Holstein to the Division 3 state title in his first season, was the Small Schools Coach of the Year. John Burke of Division 2 champion Catholic Memorial earned the Private School coaching honor – he has a 342-34-25 record in 16 seasons with the Crusaders.
