Prep boysMadison La Follette led the honors at the 29th annual Madison All-City Boys Soccer Banquet on Tuesday night at Madison West High School.

The Lancers were lauded as the city team champions and had four players on the 13-member All-City team selected by the five city coaches.

La Follette had two of the three repeat selections on the team in defenders Oscar Rodriguez, a senior, and junior Carl Schneider. Madison Edgewood senior forward Steve Gilbert also was named to the squad for the second straight year.

Ten of the All-City players were seniors — Schneider, Lancers junior forward Jesus Miranda (25-12-62) and Madison Memorial sophomore forward Lucas Cardona (14-8-36) were the lone underclassmen. Memorial and Madison West had three selections apiece, while Edgewood had two and Madison East one.

La Follette went 3-0-1 against city teams during the regular season, while West was 2-0-1, Memorial 2-2, Edgewood 0-2 and East 0-3.

Memorial also beat West 2-1 in a sectional semifinal en route to qualifying for the WIAA Division 1 state tournament; the Spartans advanced to the state final before losing to Muskego 1-0 in double overtime. Edgewood also advanced to state, falling in the Division 2 semifinals.

East was the recipient of the third annual team sportsmanship award, sponsored by BreakAway Sports Center and Middleton Sports & Fitness. Each team also had a scholar-athlete award winner, with Memorial senior midfielder Robin Forslund the only player to make the All-City team and collect a scholar-athlete award.

Howard Reddan was the guest speaker at the banquet sponsored by the Optimist Club of Downtown Madison. Goodman's Jewelers sponsored the city championship team trophy.
