Prep boysJunior goalkeeper Keenan Smith of conference champion Madison West was one of two repeat selections on the All-Big Eight Conference boys soccer team, and led a group of four Regents players on the 11-member first team chosen by conference coaches.

Middleton senior defender Matt Hanus joined Smith in making the top squad for the second straight year.

Conference runner-up Middleton had two players on the first team, as did Madison La Follette and WIAA Division 1 state runner-up Madison Memorial, which tied for third.

West's other honorees were seniors: defender Ben Bauch, midfielder Paul Lund (8-5-21) and forward Alex Bernhardt (11-5-27). Memorial midfielder Robin Forslund (5-5-15) and Verona defender Brian Arbuckle were the other seniors chosen.

Both of La Follette's selections were juniors — leading scorer Jesus Miranda (25-12-62) and defender Carl Schneider (6-1-13) — and were joined by Middleton junior midfielder Logan Matheny (5-6-16).

Forward Lucas Cardona, who led Memorial in goals (14) and points (36) and was the first sophomore in five years named to the first team of the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association all-state team, was the lone 10th grader on the squad.

What is up with the Big 8 having four defenders on each of the two All-conference teams? Clearly this group of coaches does not understand that soccer is played with one defender.
