Josh Lambo’s professional soccer career got off to a scary start.

The 17-year-old goalkeeper suffered multiple jaw fractures and a concussion when he took a knee to the head about 5 minutes into FC Dallas’ 1-1 draw with Chivas USA in a Major League Soccer Reserve Division match Sunday in Frisco, Texas.

The former Middleton and U.S. Under-17 national team goalkeeper collided with Chivas USA’s Anthony Hamilton.

The MLS SuperDraft first-round pick then was taken to a Baylor hospital, where he was scheduled to have surgery today to repair the fractures. Lambo is expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday, and likely will be out of action for at least six to eight weeks.

“We’re obviously saddened with the unfortunate injuries Josh sustained,” FC Dallas coach Steve Morrow said in a news release. “He has made tremendous progress throughout the preseason, but at this moment our thoughts are on his health and well being. We’re comforted that his family is here and wish him a complete and quick recovery.”

Lambo was poised to serve as Dario Sala’s backup this season, as FC Dallas loaned third-year pro Ray Burse Jr. to the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division on Friday.

In his comments concerning the loan deal, which allows Burse to be recalled at any time, Morrow said: “We are fortunate to have three quality goalkeepers on our roster … Furthermore, we are pleased with the progress that Josh Lambo has made this preseason.?

  • Midfielder Jesse Marsch (Racine) was the only player with Wisconsin ties to see action during MLS opening weekend, going all 90 minutes as Chivas USA pulled out a 1-1 draw at FC Dallas earlier Sunday in Frisco, Texas. Kansas City defender Aaron Hohlbein (Middleton/UW) and the FC Dallas duo of Lambo and defender Andrew Daniels (Milwaukee) were unused subs. Defender Tim Ward (Waukesha) didn’t make the game-day roster for Colorado. Be sure to follow the progress of all the Wisconsin players in pro soccer.
